“Distopian Landscapes”
Concept Description:
In a world where boundaries blur and the struggle for power and resources takes precedence, the landscape becomes a battlefield. Distopian Landscapes is an artwork that embodies the complexity of modern geopolitics, economic transactions, and social chaos. Using barbed wire—a material that both protects and excludes—a disorienting landscape emerges where nothing is as it seems.
The Battlefield Landscape:
The artwork takes the viewer into a dystopian world where the landscape serves as the arena for power struggles. Barbed wire flows like an endless stream through the space, creating barriers, severing pathways, and forming unexpected patterns. It symbolizes both safety and fear, control and chaos.
Themes in the Work:
Urbanism of the Battlefield: Urban space becomes a theater of conflict. Buildings, roads, and squares intertwine with the symbolism of barbed wire, as the physical infrastructure appears to collapse under invisible tensions.
Landscape of Politics: The tangled lines represent the intricate dynamics of geopolitical decisions, where no clear rules of engagement exist. Borders are arbitrarily defined and repeatedly violated.
Landscape of Money Flows: The shadow economy of power and influence lingers as an invisible energy throughout the work, made tangible through the layered structures of barbed wire. Monetary flows and transactions manifest in their destructive potential.
Disintegration of Common Sense: The landscape reveals the absurdity of a world where logic and reason have given way to greed and arbitrariness. The barbed wire, a hard and sharp materiality, reflects the failure of collective consciousness.
Visual Approach:
The work combines sharp geometric forms with organic chaos. The barbed wire structures suggest both controlled planning and accidental destruction. Layers and depths in the work offer varying perspectives depending on the viewer’s position. Light and shadow play a crucial role in enhancing the illusion of depth and complexity.
Meaningful Alienation:
Upon closer inspection, the landscape is not what it seems. What initially appears to be walls and fences turns out to be circles
Cirkels staan voor het herhalen van incidenten en het bewegen in golven, waardoor er nooit echt een balans ontstaat, doordat we de financiële waarden boven maatschappelijke waarden stellen.
